We were wondering what The Beat Meet hype was all about, so we paid a visit to Homegrown Space at Wisma Bentley last week to check out its 4th installment, organized by our good pals from The MoveMint. Now who says hip hop is dead?

The Beat Meet is the place for newborn producers to present their creativity in producing new beats and battle it out to win some awesome stuff. But the grand prize of an Ableton Live training package and a feature in May issue of JUICE magazine were just too sweet for these producers to join in. We were told that there were around 20 participants involved for this installment and judged by DJ Fuzz, Illsteez, Qumran, Wizzow from Jakarta and Mile High Sound’s trainer, Blastique. We bet they had a headache to pick the best beat.

To kick off the event, Vandal presented a short rap battle followed by the first pair on stage. We can see the producers were shivering when they stand before the judges. From 20, down to 8, and down to 4 for the semifinals. Judging the final two was not easy. Frankly, we think these peeps are very talented and creative in their own way. In the final lap, Saph went head-to-head with the famous Sona One of Kartel. But the tribe has voted and Saph was crowned as the winner!

Too bad the event could not be continued with the remix competition due to the time limitation. But with the strong support and great beat makers involved, we believe this sort of event would resurrect the local hip hop scene. Cheers to that!

The Beat Meet Vol. 4 at Homegrown Space went down on Saturday, 19 March 2011. Log on to www.themovemint.com to check out what The MoveMint is cookin’.
