Holy Sheet! Pussy Riot’s Been Jailed

What happens when you put Russia, feminism and punk together? Sounds like a recipe for disaster.. Well, throw in the Russian Orthodox Church, and you’ve got a right mess in your hands! Feminist punk band Pussy Riot (good name) has landed itself in hot water. The band formed last year when it became clear to them that Russia lacked political and sexual emancipation, impudence and feminism. Usually clad in skimpy clothes and neon-coloured balaclavas, they hold illegal protests, most recently against the election campaign of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Here’s where things got even more interesting: the girls of Pussy Riot ran through Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow in mini dresses, performing a song entitled ‘Holy Sh*t’, chanting, “Mother of God, drive Putin away!” Talk about bad*ss. However, this stunt got two of them arrested and could face up to seven years in jail based on charges for hooliganism. The Church received numerous pleas from the public, asking them to shorten the sentence of the two women. Church spokesman Vsevolod Chaplin wrote on his blog, “The Church is not going to yield to the pressure of the aggressive group trying to provoke a sense of pity.” Pussy Riot has been branded as “sinners”, their concerts described as “boorish, arrogant and aggressive” and a challenge to Christians.

Oh, come on now. Didn’t Jesus tell us to love the sinners?!!
