This weekend sees the second Red Bull Music Academy session of the year (with kidkanevil no less), a freakshow, League of Captain’s fourth Prime Fridays, an arts and music festival with the objective of raising cancer awareness, a conversation with a famed war photographer, and a bunch of live music gigs featuring local acts. Oh, because we’re nice like that, get Uber promo codes here.

Red Bull Music Academy Pres. Kidkanevil
Kidkanevil

Following the likes of TOKiMONSTABok Bok, and B. Bravo, RBMA alumnus and DJ-producer Kidkanevil will be down at Zouk Club KL to have an intimate one-on-one with a moderator for an invite-only lecture session. The producer combines his penchant for hip hop, anime soundtracks as well as videogame music to create diverse, impish dance music, which is exemplified on new record Rap Biscuits EP 1 and most notably, in his collaborative project Kidsuke with Japanese producer Daisuke Tanabe. The project saw the two talents conflate their ideas and skills into an album filled with whimsical, downtempo tracks where the beats and sounds were enabled by toys and children’s instruments.

If you want to hear Kidkanevil regale about his music-making process and more, it’s sadly too late to register for the lecture session. But you are still more than welcome to catch him perform at APEX later at night, along with bass music by way of Akhyla’s Fatim (now also a member of ATTAGIRL!) and some Soulection-inclined hip hop courtesy of Emir Hermono x Fliko, all of whom will open for the main act.

Date Friday 4 March ’16
Time 8pm (Lecture Session) / 11pm (Club Night)
Venue APEX @ Zouk Club KL

No guestlist needed for the club night.

Gaslight Cafe Pres. Ariff AB
Ariff AB

Ariff AB is returning to perform at Gaslight Cafe. The alternative indie freak folk singer-songwriter (a mouthful, we know) is capable of leaving the audience wanting more with a melancholy voice that creates an air of mystery. He’s performed for a BBC live music session and will again be accompanied by his brooding guitar for a performance that will undoubtedly send shivers down your spine.

Date Friday 4 March ’16
Time 8.30pm
Venue Gaslight Cafe

LoC Prime Fridays #4
Afaro

For the fourth edition of LoC’s Prime Fridays, the café-boutique is expected to transform into a club setting when EDM-trap connoisseur H3 goes behind the decks, dropping big beats of trap, dubstep, 808s, and other tunes of club-appropriate variety. Joining him is HOAX’s own Afaro, who’s less assaulting in his approach of feeding your feel-good senses. As usual, entry is free. There will even be Pestle and Mortar swag up for grabs – who knows, you may be a lucky recipient of a P&M tote bag.

Freakshow Exhibition

Graduates of Limkokwing University circa 2000 to 2003 are reuniting to host a collaborative exhibition with an intriguing theme  — freakshows. Maybe there will be a Bowie-inspired piece since the university’s founder is a huge supporter of the late musician.  Among the few participating artists are Zainal Abidin Musa, Shazry Azman, Jacqueline Katherine Gomez, Dali A. Azis, and Alpharizan Supiee. Actual freakshows won’t be present in physical form, however, after having too much to drink, we’re fairly certain everyone’s inner Hyde will be on public display, which should be good enough to freak the next person out.

Date Friday 4 March — Thursday 10 March ’16
Time 8.30pm
Venue Minut Init Art Social

An Evening Talk With Coşkun Aral: From War To Peace
Coskun-aral-dunya-guncesi-kosova-630

Coşkun Aral is heavily involved with war — he’s not the bad guy, mind you, but he is the one that documents what happens so the rest of the world are aware of the situation. He did everything from taking photographs (his work has been featured in the likes of TIMENewsweek, and Paris Match), to interviewing hijackers, to working as a war correspondent since 1986. Coşkun will be in KL over the weekend to share his knowledge and experiences regarding taking on a job that puts your life on the line, and lighter topics in-between, hopefully.
