Places to Go on the Weekend of 29 July — 31 July ’16
This weekend, treat yourself to paella, pizza, and sangria at Maple Market or Dr.Inc’s monthly food market. But if dancing to good music sounds more appealing than overeating, check out Pitahati’s gig at Gaslight Cafe & Music or SaturdaySelects’ audiovisual party at Arte Bar on Saturday. If you are in Penang, head over to Heineken’s party at Hin Bus Depot celebrating the launch of its latest campaign, ‘Shape Your City’. There are also a couple of art exhibitions to check out – one that was inspired by the Mahathir administration and another by tomatoes. Yes, tomatoes.
Maple Market
This food market – as with anything similar to it – aims to introduce its attendees with some of the finest foods available around the Valley. Vendors for this weekend include Accidental Bakers, Amazin Graze, Honey Hearts, The Raw Power House, Boys on Teeth (potentially catering to cannibals?), and many, many more. In between eating and drinking to your gut’s delight, there will also be music performances by Ray Cheong and Lesli of Sape Musician throughout the weekend. View the entire floor planning here for a better idea for your consumption plan.

Era Mahathir
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad holds the title of being the longest serving Prime Minister of Malaysia – 22 years, good grief – and there’s no denying the country of having the most progress under his administration’s leadership. However, he was also equally responsible for creating just as many setbacks to Malaysia (that gave rise to subsequent abuse of power) as he was with moving us forward (hello, Ops Lalang), which is why he is the ideal source of inspiration for contemporary artists who are working within a political theme. Ilham Gallery‘s upcoming exhibition, Era Mahathir, will showcase 44 works produced by 28 Malaysian artists that look into the issues and policies that were passed under the aforementioned administration as well as the impact it had on our beloved nation today. Some of the artists included in the four-month long exhibition are Zulkifli Yusoff, Liew Kung Yu, Nirmala Dutt, Noor Azizan Rahman Paiman, Anurendra Jegadeva, Ahmad Fuad, and many more.

Heineken Pres. Shape Your City
Shape Your City is the latest campaign championed by Heineken. It’s a global mission that aims to showcase every city in differing lights – the light in the case of Malaysia being creative individuals that have helped shape their respective communities. For its kick off party here, Heineken has booked famed Penang exhibition space, Hin Bus Depot, for numerous artists to collectively work on creating a space that disrupts common social habits. The party would have been incomplete without a music element to it – naturally, Heineken’s invited a few of its favourite DJs, namely Goldfish & Blink, JHIN, and Axel Groove, to be in charge of the dancefloor.

Mosquito Bite 蚊子叮 solo exhibition by CC Kua
The inspiration behind this exhibition happened after the artist was perplexed while figuring out whether a tomato should be categorised as a fruit or a vegetable, which then led to this moment of clarity; “Despite of this, I stubbornly classify tomato as vegetable, this has been affirmed since I was a child. As I grow older, I gradually came to realise that our world is not enveloped by atmosphere, but our values and perception. Hence, it is impossible to achieve total equality in the world, and that’s the reason why we need philosophy and art.” Who would have thought that a vegetable/fruit would have been responsible for an art exhibition? But we’re glad it did because it caught our attention, for sure.
