Cameron Highlands has long settled into its role as the default cool-weather escape. Tea estates, steamboat dinners, roadside stalls, and the inevitable crawl of traffic on long weekends—it’s a rhythm most Malaysians know well.

But familiarity has its trade-offs.

Perched on a hilltop in Tanah Rata overlooking the Sultan Ahmad Shah Golf Club, Oakwood Cameron Highlands enters this landscape without trying to disrupt it. Instead, it offers a slightly different way of engaging with it—less compressed, more measured, and a little removed from the usual pace.

A Familiar Escape, Reconsidered

For Simon Yu, General Manager of Oakwood Cameron Highlands, the change is less about the destination and more about the expectations people bring with them.

“Cameron Highlands presents a very specific opportunity. It has long been a familiar destination for Malaysians and regional travellers, but the way people want to experience it is changing,” he says.

“There is a growing demand for space, longer stays, and environments that allow people to reset and think more clearly—not just pass through.”

That shift is reflected in the property’s setup. Rather than a conventional hotel, Oakwood Cameron Highlands operates as a serviced residence, with an emphasis on livability. The units range from Deluxe Rooms to Two-Bedroom Family Suites, many equipped with kitchens, washing machines, and larger living areas. It’s a format that lends itself to longer stays, or at least the option of one.

Space, and What It Does to a Place

“What sets us apart is the combination of scale, layout, and perspective,” Yu explains.

The difference is most noticeable in how the property sits within its surroundings. Where many developments in the highlands feel closely packed, this one opens outward, facing the golf course.

“Instead of being tucked into dense clusters, the views extend outward—which changes how the space feels throughout the day.”

It’s not a dramatic shift, but it’s a perceptible one. The added openness affects the way light moves through the space, how sound carries, and how time feels over the course of a day.

“It’s less about adding more, and more about creating the right conditions for a better stay.”

Keeping Things Grounded

The approach to experiences follows a similar line of thinking.

“Our approach is to keep experiences grounded and authentic to the destination, rather than overly programmed,” Yu says.

Cameron Highlands already comes with its own set of routines—morning walks, tea plantations, local markets. Here, the intention seems to be to make those easier to access, rather than to layer on something new.

“The intention is not to overwhelm, but to guide—so guests leave feeling like they have experienced Cameron Highlands in a more meaningful way.”

The Practicalities

Oakwood Cameron Highlands is a 383-key serviced residence and hotel, offering a mix of deluxe rooms, studios, and two-bedroom family suites. Selected units include fully equipped kitchens, washing machines, and dryers, supporting both short and extended stays.

Amenities include a gymnasium, 24-hour reception, complimentary WiFi, housekeeping services, and an on-site launderette.

“Being in Cameron Highlands comes with a responsibility to be thoughtful about how we operate,” Yu says.

Sustainability, in this case, is treated less as a talking point and more as an operational baseline, focusing on energy use, water management, and resource efficiency.

From Volume to Value

“I think we are seeing a shift from volume to quality of stay,” Yu reflects.

Cameron Highlands will likely remain as popular as ever, but how people choose to experience it may continue to evolve. Short visits are giving way to longer, more considered stays, where the emphasis is less on covering ground and more on how time is spent.

“Instead of competing on attractions or density, the focus moves towards how the stay actually feels—the space, the atmosphere, and the overall experience from arrival to departure.”

It’s a shift that’s less about adding something new, and more about adjusting the pace as you can tell from the vibe on their Instagram account.

Oakwood Cameron Highlands isn’t trying to rewrite Cameron Highlands. It just slows things down enough for you to notice what’s already there.

Which, in this part of the country, isn’t a bad place to start.
