New Superman Jon Kent, the Son of Clark Kent & Lois Lane, is Coming Out as Bisexual According to DC
Just in time for National Coming Out Day, DC Comics has confirmed that Jonathan Kent – Earth’s new Superman and the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, is a bisexual!
According to NY Times, Jon can be seen kissing reporter Jay Nakamura in issue five of the comic book, Superman: Son of Kal-El which will be released on 9 November.
“It’s not a gimmick. When I was offered this job, I thought, well, if we are going to have a new Superman for the DC Universe, it feels like a missed opportunity to have another straight white saviour,” the writer, Tom Taylor, said in an interview while wearing a rainbow-striped Superman logo T-shirt.
“We didn’t want this to be ‘DC Comics creates new queer Superman’. We want this to be ‘Superman finds himself, becomes Superman and then comes out,’ and I think that’s a really important distinction there,” Tom explains.
Tom also noted that the new Superman had to have “new fights and real-world problems” and the same-sex relationship is just one of the ways that Jon is proving to be a different Superman than his famous father.
Since the new series began in July, Jon has combated wildfires caused by climate change, thwarted a high school shooting and protested the deportation of refugees in Metropolis.
Though Jon is not the first LGBT+ hero, and will not be the last, comics experts said that there was something particularly momentous about Superman coming out. Faster than a speeding bullet, change is coming to the Superman comics and we love to see it!
