For the uninitiated, HYBE (formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment) is the record label behind the highly successful groups BTS and NewJeans. Geffen Records has similarly produced major Western pop stars as well, like Olivia Rodrigo and Nelly Furtado, besides being Nirvana’s label post-Sub Pop in the ‘90s.

With more than 120,000 submissions made for the Global Girl Group Audition in November of 2021, the final 20 have been quietly training under the world-renowned K-pop training and development system for the last year in Los Angeles, CA.

As mentioned, the 20 contestants are from all over the world, with a handful of participants from South Korea and the United States, as well as from countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Brazil, and Slovakia.

The years-long process of creating this one-of-a-kind girl group will be the subject of an upcoming untitled Netflix documentary series. With unprecedented access, the series will be a compelling portrayal of their journey to global stardom which will be released in 2024.

Starting now, the 20 aspiring artistes will participate in a world-class audition program titled “The Debut: Dream Academy,” and fans can follow the contestants as they embark on the audition program. The show will premiere on September 1 on YouTube.

At the end of the audition program later this year, the final members of the group will be determined, and the name of the group will be revealed.

The show will span across 12 weeks leading up to the live finale on November 17 where fans will play a crucial role throughout the entire competition via fan voting on Weverse and TikTok.

Alongside fan voting, a panel of experienced evaluators will offer valuable feedback and guidance to the contestants, playing an essential role in shaping the growth and development of these talented young starlets.
