If you’re a sucker for timeless, retro-inspired sneakers, you’ll want to give the newly announced New Balance 204L a good look.
While any mention of the brand will usually bring to mind big, chunky Dad shoes, the 204L is different. It’s slimmer, sleeker, and low-profile. And that’s why we think this one will fly off shelves and online stores quickly.
For the streets, as opposed to the sports field

At first glance, the 204L is reminiscent of New Balance’s other retro silhouettes, like the 990 series for example. It clearly nods to the brand’s running heritage, but it takes a sharp turn away from the usual chunky silhouettes.
Blending vintage cues from the ’70s to the early 2000s, the 204L is a low-profile, lifestyle-forward design that feels way more street than sports field. It’s got cleaner lines, with an upper that combines a bunch of interesting materials.

It’s got a multi-piece construction with embossed overlays and premium suede, topped off with that double-stacked ‘N’ logo. There’s a sort of quiet confidence with the shoe. It doesn’t really shout, but take one look at it and you’ll know it’s a retro New Balance silhouette.
While New Balance has already cornered the market in terms of comfort, the 204L takes things up a notch with a tech-inspired texture, screen-printed details on the saddle, and a subtle tread pattern on the outsole that throws back to ’70s runners. But at the same time, the shoe also exudes a kind of sleekness only found in more modern 2000s silhouettes.
It’s as if someone hit ‘Shuffle’ on a playlist of New Balance’s greatest design hits and put it all in one silhouette. I don’t hate it at all.

“When designing the 204L, we knew we wanted to offer a versatile, sleek sneaker while producing something new and fresh,” says Pierome Sar, Senior Designer at New Balance. “The shoe is designed to stand out from other New Balance models with this convergence of two different eras, set to be released in unique materials and colourways.”
The shoe isn’t exactly a replacement for any existing silhouette. But if you’re after something a little slimmer, a little more future-facing but still rooted in nostalgia, the 204L is definitely worth a spot on your shoe rack.
Retailing at RM499, the 204L will hit New Balance stores in Pavilion KL and IOI City Mall, plus online, starting 30 July 2025
More colourways are on the way too, so if the first drop isn’t exactly your vibe, sabar, there’s more coming.
