What started as a seemingly ordinary relationship descended into the abyss of obsession, deceit, and, ultimately – a horrifying murder.

The haunting narrative began in 1992, intertwining the lives of Lily Chua and Lisy Teo, an unsuspecting piano teacher from Seremban. Lisy, blissfully married to Michael, found herself unwittingly caught in a web of lies and deception spun by a “mysterious caller” who identified herself as ‘Mrs Wong.’

The unsettling thread of events commenced innocuously in February 1992 when ‘Mrs Wong’ initiated contact with Lisy, posing as a potential client seeking piano lessons for her daughter. Yet, as the days passed, the nature of the calls evolved into a disturbing series of questions and allegations. ‘Mrs Wong’ began inquiring about personal details such as Lisy’s birth date, and finally accusing Lisy’s husband of engaging in an extramarital affair with a prostitute, escalating the harassment to an alarming level.

Despite Lisy’s attempts to dismiss the calls as baseless, ‘Mrs Wong’ persisted, adopting various narratives to further unsettle her target. Concerned for his wife’s safety, Michael disclosed that ‘Mrs Wong’ had gone to extreme lengths, even hiring a private investigator to monitor him and ensure his safety.

In an effort to shield Lisy from the looming threat, Michael also instructed her to contact the police and hand over recordings of conversations with ‘Mrs Wong’ should anything happen to him.

Amidst the turmoil, the couple managed to restore a semblance of normalcy when, in May 1992, the calls temporarily ceased. However, the respite was fleeting. In July of the same year, ‘Mrs Wong’s’ harassment intensified, taking a more sinister turn. Threats extended beyond Lisy to include her family members, with ominous declarations promising an unnerving fate.

The tension reached its climax on 22 July 1992, when the police arrived unannounced at Lisy’s Seremban residence at 1 a.m. They detained her for questioning, seeking information about a certain ‘Lily Chua.’ Bewildered and terrified, Lisy had no knowledge of Lily Chua at the time.

Only later, in a shocking revelation that reverberated across the nation, did Lisy learn the truth. ‘Mrs Wong’ was none other than Lily Chua, a singer and karaoke lounge owner entangled in an affair with Michael. What transpired was a toxic relationship defined by blackmail and threats, with Lily refusing to accept the end of the liaison.

The breaking point arrived on 6 July 1993, when Michael, after terminating their relationship, inadvertently stabbed Lily during a confrontation. What followed was a gruesome act of dismemberment, with Lily’s remains unceremoniously discarded near Jalan Tunku.

The discovery of Lily’s remains by a street cleaner two days later marked the beginning of a meticulous police investigation. Initially denying any knowledge of Lily, Michael succumbed to the mounting pressure when authorities threatened to involve Lisy in the interrogation.

On 19 July 1993, Michael confessed to the heinous crime, unravelling the details of Lily’s agonising death and the disposal of her remains. However, the toll on Lisy had already manifested. Detained for over 16 hours, she experienced physical distress, resulting in hospitalisation. Tragically, her unborn child did not survive the ordeal.

Gan Wei Seng, now exposed as a criminal, faced charges of manslaughter and subsequent imprisonment. His release in 2000 marked a somber chapter for those affected, as he returned to his family under a new identity, attempting to forge a new beginning – one that many citizens felt he was undeserving of.
