Strictly speaking, a mishmash would imply a chaotic fusion of unrelated items simply strewn together. Thankfully, Mish Mash embodies the full monty of everything else barring that. Instead, it’s a scrupulously curated café-cum-bar-cum-art gallery-cum-tobacco emporium. A mouthful indeed, but it definitely does pull it off in its own snug way. The whole space is draped in a sunny yellow, complemented by pastel shades and wooden embellishments. Airy, well-lit and situated accessibly along Muntri Street, homely vibes abound as you step into the relatively new establishment, complete with striking artwork on the walls.

A vintage cigar booth flushed with a carefully curated selection of choice cigars is stationed right beside the congregational bar, where the alcohol alchemist and founder of the casual lounge, Ben Ng, works his magic alongside mixologist Oliver. Even if you’re not into the fine single-malts or Japanese draughts at Mish Mash, the invigorating cocktails are worth a shot. Selectively deconstructed and reimagined, you’ll get to experience a tasteful potpourri of flavours hard to obtain anywhere else – economically priced to boot. Also note that speakeasy’s aren’t something you could find in Penang, this might just be the first one!

If you do decide to hop down a little early on the other hand, a cuppa of the zesty Orange Cappucino or the Raging Beast (chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate!) accompanied by some delectable light bites might be able to tide you through the day. Like much of the rest of Penang, Mish Mash possesses an effortless laidback charm which few bars down here in the Klang Valley can even dream of. It’s not pretentious – it just is what it is. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day at work, or even a chill environment to have a couple of drinks (and a cigar, maybe!) while catching up with your friends before hitting the town hard when this joint closes at midnight.
