It is safe to say that if it weren’t for Hongkie Michael Lau’s Gardener vinyl figures, there wouldn’t be the vinyl toy industry as it is now. It was in 1999 that Michael’s toy madness began, causing a riot in Europe and the United States. Last year, Michael commemorated one decade as a designer with the 10th anniversary of Gardener, his first vinyl collection based on his own comic strip in East Touch magazine since 1998. Since then, he’s been teaming up with big names such as A Bathing Ape and even Nike. This man is practically a legend.

Last December, KL was graced with the Michael Lau x MINDstyle Family Tradition Art Exhibition at the beautiful, black-and-white Zinc Art Space in Bangsar. People arrived as early as 7pm to get up close with Michael Lau’s amazing urban vinyl and the man himself. Present were some of the biggest influencers in KL such as DJ Bunga, Joyce Wong, Pipit, Kenji of Black Fryday, Joe Flizzow and Edwin Choong of Sole What?.

The space was buzzing as guests bore witness to Michael Lau’s wicked vinyl toys and paintings. Some of the limited edition items on sale were the God Father Figure, the Gardener 6-inch figure and the Michael Lau x MINDstyle x Baracuta MLMD Watch Set. The Gardener Tenth Book, a comprehensive collection of Michael Lau’s works, was sold out even before the event started. There were also exhibits from painter Ron English and the MINDstyle family, which were equally dope.

It went from a barren art space to a packed house as the growing crowd sipped on yummy 42Below cocktails and chomped on treats from Delicious. It was a definitely memorable night for design enthusiasts and one that inspired creative heads to step up their game.

The Michael Lau x MINDstyle Family Tradition Art Exhibition was held at Zinc Art Space on 10 December 2009. Check out Michael Lau at www.michaellau-art.com, MINDstyle at www.mindstyle.com and the wonderful Zinc Art Space at www.zinc.com.my.
