4 years ago, Jewish rapper Matthew Paul Miller (aka Matisyahu) bounced onto the scene with his lighting-speed rhyming and stately-Hasidic beard.
Surpassing the novelty stage, he tightens up his lyrical spill on his 3rd album Light. The same bouncy reggae rhythms that made him irresistible on his previous efforts dominate most of the album but there’s also a generous portion of skipping hip hop beats and new wave-y keyboards. Spiritual self-improvement remains as Matisyahu’s foundation. Add in some banjos, clarinets and a children’s choir, and you’ve got a classic counter-culture rap album.
