Mason: They Are Among Us (Animal Language)
Do you still remember 2007’s party anthem ‘Exceeder’? We bet some of you still do. Somehow, the Dutch duo Mason (made of Chronis and Coen Berrier) went off-radar after their one-off hit. However, the boys are back with a long-awaited 12-track debut album They Are Among Us. ‘Boedicea’ is the first single which features Roisin Murphy on vocal. Besides her, artists like Sam Sparro, DMC of Run DMC, Aqualung, Sway and Kurtis Blow also contribute vocals for this genre-diverse album that blends pop, Italo disco and funk, but honestly, we find their vibe getting too commercial.
This could be an attempt to reach mainstream listeners as evident with catchy disco-feel opener ‘Runaway’. Things get dark after that on ‘You Are Not Alone’, but not for long as dancey tunes pick up the pace again on ‘Little Angel’ (with Aqualung) and electro house banger ‘Corrected’ with DMC and Sam Sparro. If you’re into a techier sound, you might get hooked to ‘Kippschwinger’. Mason concluded the album with one of their previous releases, ‘Who Killed Trance?’. There are a few hits and misses in this album and it sounds more pop than previous productions. But it sure ain’t a flop either.
