If you’ve been online this past week, you would have undoubtedly come across the many Spotify Wrapped posts and stories across social media. This is the time of year when the platform gives personalised stats and playlists.

While we’re used to our co-workers posting up Imagine Dragons as their artist of the year six years in a row, Spotify themselves also posts up their own Wrapped, featuring the top artists, albums, songs, and podcasts that over 574 million people around the world listened to.

As a whole, Spotify in 2023 saw the dominance of major female artists and K-Pop across the world and in Malaysia. Globally, Taylor Swift takes the reigns as Spotify’s top artist this year, followed by Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, Drake, and Peso Pluma.

For Malaysia’s 2023 Wrapped results, we see the nation’s love for talent and music from both the East and West. In Malaysia, Taylor Swift also ranks at the top of the list of most-streamed artists of the year, followed by The Weeknd, BTS, SZA, and BLACKPINK.

The early viral hit ‘Kill Bill’ by SZA takes home the title of Malaysia’s Top Song of the Year, with Indonesian hits: ‘Sial’ by Mahalini and ‘Tak Segampang Itu’ by Anggi Marito taking second and third, followed by ‘OMG’ by NewJeans and ‘Seven (feat. Latto)’ by Jung Kook.

For local acts, Masdo emerges as Malaysia’s Top Local Artist of the Year, followed by Dato’ Sri Siti Nuhaliza at second place. Surprisingly, local rapper Luqman Podolski comes in third, and is also named the Top RADAR Malaysia Artist of the Year.

Meanwhile, Dalia Farhana is crowned the Top EQUAL Malaysia Artist of the Year, which is Spotify’s gender equity program dedicated to amplifying women creators and their music. Her single ‘Langit Yang Sama’ takes home the title of Malaysia’s Top Local Song of the Year.

Of course, music isn’t the only thing Spotify offers as local podcast ‘MALAM SERAM’ has been named Malaysia’s Top Podcast of the Year. Judging by how much Malaysians love a good horror story, it is no surprise that this podcast comes out on top.

So who would come out on top for next year’s Spotify Wrapped? Hopefully, we’ll have someone like Dolla becoming Malaysia’s Top Local Artist of the Year in 2024.
