In a series of unfortunate events in the United States, a motorist in a rented pickup truck deliberately drove down a bike path, crashing into a school bus and ultimately killing eight people, leaving 11 injured. The man who is identified as Sayfullo Saipov, 29, was shot in the abdomen by a police officer right after he exited the truck and ran on the driveway with a pellet gun or paintball gun while shouting “Allahuakbar,” which means “God is Great” in Arabic.

The incident that happened on Tuesday – only less than a mile away from the World Trade Center – is said to be the worst terrorist attack in New York City since 11 September ‘01. Authorities found handwritten notes that suggest ties to the Islamic State, however, there isn’t any direct evidence that can confirm the relationship between Saipov and ISIS, so investigators are treating it as a case of an “inspired” attacker.

Upon discovering the notes, Mayor Bill de Blasio declared the rampage as a terrorist attack:

“Based on information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians.”

President Donald Trump responded to the incident with a tweet, offering his condolences to the family members of the victims, expressing no tolerance for violence in the country.
