A man in Kuala Lumpur learned the hard way that littering can come with a hefty price tag.
According to authorities, the man was fined RM1,500 and ordered to complete four hours of community service after he was caught throwing a burger wrapper in public.
The case was heard at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, where the offence fell under Section 77A(1) of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672).

Not the only one
The incident wasn’t an isolated case either.
Two other individuals were reportedly punished with the same penalty after they were caught littering cigarette butts in public areas around Bukit Bintang and KLCC during an enforcement operation.
Authorities said all three offenders were fined RM1,500 each and required to complete four hours of community service (MKM) within a month.
Failing to pay the fine could result in one month in jail, according to the ruling.

A reminder for everyone
Officials say the enforcement is meant to send a clear message: littering won’t be tolerated, regardless of who you are.
In a statement, SWCorp Wilayah Persekutuan stressed that action is taken fairly and without compromise, whether the offenders are locals or foreigners.
It’s a costly reminder that what might seem like a small act, like tossing a wrapper on the street, can quickly turn into a much bigger problem.
So the next time you finish your burger in KL, it might be worth holding on to that wrapper a little longer until you find a bin.
