Ever heard of the Great British Bake Off?

The Great British Bake Off (GBBO) is a show where home bakers duke it out against each other to demonstrate their baking abilities and win the title of Britain’s best amateur baker.

As you’ve probably noticed from the title of this article, a 32-year-old Malaysian contestant by the name of Syabira Yusoff managed to snag top place in the 13th season of GBBO (2022), beating her co-finalists Abdul Rehman Sharif and Sandro Farmhouse.

Syabira works full-time as a cardiovascular researcher in London when she’s not baking tasty treats. Pictured above is the competition-winning cake she baked depicting an orangutan holding up its rainforest home.

Aside from the insane amount of creativity and hard work she put into making the cake, orangutans and rainforests are so deeply associated with Malaysia, making the cake all the more meaningful both for herself and the Malaysians back home that rooted for her.

GBBO also pointed out on their official website that Syabira consistently showcases Malaysian flavours through skillfully incorporating them into classic British pastries such as a cornish she made stuffed with chicken rendang.

In an interview after her win, Syabira exclaimed that her win was “the biggest achievement in my life. All the hard work, the trial and error, it has all been worth it. I am very very proud,” .

Additionally, she also posted a remark onto GBBO’s official Facebook page stating how she’s “coming out as a different person after this competition. I have grown more self-assured and believe in my gut. As long as we put our hearts into it and work hard for it, we can achieve anything.”
