Malaysian films are steadily gaining recognition throughout the wider international industry, with films like Imaginur and Hungry Ghost Diner being some of the year’s standouts. Adding to that list is Tiger Stripes, the debut feature film by director Amanda Nell Eu.

The only Malaysian film to play in the Cannes Film Festival this year, Tiger Stripes has gone on to gain recognition in other festivals, winning the prestigious H.R. Giger “Narcisse” Award for best feature film at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival and also a Special Jury Mention at Fantasia International Film Festival.

Supported by the Ministry of Communication and Digital via MyCreative and FINAS, Tiger Stripes will be released in Taiwan next month by Taiwanese distributor ProView Entertainment and will also have a theatrical release in Singapore and South Korea this year.

Besides that, this coming-of-age horror film will have its UK premiere at the British Film Institute London Film Festival as part of the First Feature Competition.

Tiger Stripes follows a 12-year-old girl Zaffan who struggles with puberty, discovering that her body morphs in a terrifying way. As her own community further provokes her, she soon learns that embracing her true self is the only answer to her freedom.

The film stars three new talents, Zafreen Zairizal, Deena Ezral, and Piqa, alongside veteran local actors Shaheizy Sam, Jun Lojong and Fatimah Abu Bakar.

Amanda is a talented filmmaker, with an MA in Filmmaking from the London Film School and an impressive resume that includes participation in both the Berlinale Talents and Locarno Filmmakers Academy.

Her short film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and has won multiple awards at international festivals, including a Special Mention at the International Short Film Festival Clermont-Ferrand.

Meanwhile, her next short film also won Best Picture at the Scream Asia Horror Shorts competition, and now she’s poised to make her mark in the world of feature films with her debut, Tiger Stripes.

Tiger Stripes will be coming to Malaysian theatres in October, stay tuned for its official release date and screening details.
