You could argue that like the label’s prior releases, Origins isn’t exactly breaking new grounds, but just like them, there’s no doubt that it’s a solid, well-thought three-track EP. Produced by London-based South Africa native Josh Turvey, the EP explores an even more niche market than usual Akhyla records: Ambient beats with world and ethnic music influences as defined by Akhyla’s genre constant(s) — post-dubstep and broken beat. All the compositions on Origins are layered beautifully with sonically brilliant sound design, but are also missing essential hooks – not that it matters, the label has never done anything for the sake of marketability. Yoshi’s definitely got talent, and it’ll be interesting to see where he goes from here.
Worth a listen.
