There’s zero semblance to what you knew of tUnE-yArDs on her latest single ‘Wait For a Minute’ — the experimentation is remarkably toned down to a level that can appeal to the masses; no polyrhythmic insanity and subversion of song composition here. That is not to say Merrill Garbus isn’t her off-kilter self, but with the aid of Malay — the same producer whose oeuvre is previously limited to hip hop and r’n’b acts: Frank Ocean, Big Boi, Alicia Keys — her vocals are reflective of his poppy r’n’b beat (think Ocean’s ‘Lost’); breathy instead of wild. While a welcomed anodyne change from her usual experimental pop, the ditty is only one of two tracks produced by Malay, the direction of her upcoming LP Nikki Nack is still up in the air. We are more than please with the more accessible tUnE-yArDs presented here though.

Nikki Nack is slated for release on 5 May ’14 via 4AD. More on tUnE-yArDs here.
