As explained to Matt Wilkinson on Beats 1, Tegan and Sara are now putting the focus onto themselves with their new album after supporting big names in pop such as fun., Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga. The first single ‘Boyfriend’ taken from the twin’s forthcoming album Love You to Death is a straightforward pop song in the sense that it tells relationship woes plainly, though the subject of the matter is nothing but, as Sara offered, “I was getting into [a relationship] with a girl who had never dated a girl before.” But take gender out of the equation, it’s a happy-sad song that’s highly relatable, “You treat me like your boyfriend, and trust me like a very best friend,” she continues to list the intimate proximity of their relationship before confessing, “But I don’t want to be your secret anymore.”
