Formerly a monthly night at the legendary and now sadly defunct Home Club, Singapore, audiovisual collective-cum-label Syndicate has been at the forefront of the beat scene since 2009. Their Beat Invitational series — an early night gathering for producers to showcase their music — had seen participation by electronic acts from Kuala Lumpur before, namely Pradana and Mushroom Buttons. It’s an honour then that the latter was one of the names picked for the debut of the series’ first release, The Beat Invitational EP, which just dropped today to coincide with Singapore’s National Day.
Compiling some of the series’ best up-and-coming participants, the EP sees a menagerie of influences reflective of the Soundcloud zeitgeist — no beat is bogged down by a singular sound. Aesthetics range from post dubstep and glitch; to 808 kicks, snares and hi-hats; to chillwave and minimal sounds, all without seeming like they were different parts of differing scenes.
