Def Jux is no more, but El-P is still possessed of that underground gusto that got him declaring “Sign to Rawkus? I’d rather be mouthfucked by Nazis unconscious!” Especially so when paired up with Killer Mike, who only found real footing in the industry after collaborating with the King of the Underground (well, royalty in the late nineties and early noughties at least). On Run the Jewels’ debut full-length, the two showed that they make for a particularly even more potent pairing as a proper rap duo (as opposed to rap-producer combo), annihilating lesser rappers over Bomb Squad by way of the dirty south beats. Latest single to Run the Jewels 2, the matter-of-factly titled sequel to their first outing as a group, features another lost treasure of their era, Zack de la Rocha. And just like Producto and Mike, Zack’s verse sees a rejuvenated rebel in him. So close your eyes and count to the fucks you’d give till he disappears again.
