RiFF RAFF, not to be mistaken for an alien James Franco, started out as a joke on MTV’s abysmal From G’s to Gents – he’s got MTV tattooed on him, which was a decision he made after being told he got the reality show gig. He is still a joke now, but a self-aware joke that everyone is in on (except the ‘real hip hop’ community) who has proven himself as a more than deft/daft rapper. Finally accepted by the mainstream via Diplo, his Mad Decent debut Neon Icon is ruined by the DJ-producer’s cluelessness as to what was appealing about him to begin with. Thankfully Asperger’s Nate Dogg aka ILoveMakonnen came out of nowhere and inspired every motherfucker in town, RiFF RAFF’s alter ego Jody Highroller included. Produced by Mike WiLL Made-It, ‘Syrup in my Soda’ is a counterpoint to Enyce’s innocent take on soda by adding some purp to the drink. As per usual, Makonnen manages to add pathos in the most absurd of things, in this case, keeping syrup in your soda.
