While Yeezus searches for real friends in the midst of falling outs and fame – blaming himself for the loss of companionship – beatsmith Emir Hermono is that outsider looking in, that lurker on your Instagram shaking his head at your club photos. ‘Fake Friends’, a track off forthcoming album 3AM in Jakarta, doesn’t have the benefit of its title track’s guest feature (up-and-coming Indo rapper Ariel Nayaka), but as the song had also proven, Emir’s got quite the husky vocals tailor made for hypnagogic beats. One whose judgmental intonation is all that more indicting when he croons, “Cause I just need to know… know if you know it’s 3am and you’re alone.”
