LISTEN: Earl Sweatshirt’s ‘Solace’

After a long hiatus, Earl Sweatshirt released his sophomore album, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside, last month and uploaded a 10-minute project titled ‘Solace’ earlier today. Both were dropped out of nowhere; it seems like artistes are wont to pull a Beyoncé these days — secret surprise albums and all that. ‘Solace’ is a composition of music Earl created when he was at his lowest — “Music from when I hit the bottom and found something,” as his YouTube description states. The project reveals the rapper’s current struggles (“Trying to make some sense of all this shit in my brain, one foot stuck in a tar pit of my ways”) and is dedicated to his mother whom he’s had a strange relationship with. Remember when Mama Earl was put under Golfwang’s harsh spotlight after sending the rapper away to a boarding school in Samoa?
