The experimental multi-instrumentalist Liam Finn has a fling with the darkside on his new single ‘Better To Be’. Off his album I’ll Be Lightning, the Kiwi conjures up a processed bassline and drives it all the way until the song ends abruptly with its downtempo chorus. Spooky lyrics about “the boy inside who just can’t unwind” complement the offbeat music. Paranoia and insomnia are further invoked by the accompanying Thomas Ligotti-esque music video. Finn really knows how to groove up the Goth while keeping it somber and pop (Girl / You seemed so nice). Fans of Radiohead, take note.
