In the world of luxury timepieces, it’s not surprising to see some over-engineered pieces designed to stand out (and cost an arm and a leg).

Interestingly though, we don’t really pay much lip service to watch boxes, the very devices designed to keep our beloved timepieces safe when we’re not wearing them.

Swiss clock manufacturer L’Epée 1839 has just unveiled what could possibly be the most over-engineered watch box ever at the ongoing LVMH Watch Week.

An over-engineered masterpiece

Simply called the Mechanical Watch Box, or as L’Epée 1839 calls it, a “VIP lounge for your timepiece”, the device has a transparent design, allowing you to peek into the inner workings of the case. And there’s definitely a lot to look at.

People in the luxury watch community tend to view their timepieces as statements, not just tools to tell the time. The same can be said about the L’Epée 1839 Mechanical Watch Box. According to the manufacturer, the Mechanical Watch Box is designed and engineered to present your watch “in a way it truly deserves”.

So with all those mechanical components, how does the Mechanical Watch Box even work?

If you press the one and only button on the box, it’ll spring to life with the help of a mechanical lift system, opening the box and raising the wristwatch inside. This basically allows you to display the watch in a more prominent position.

When closing the Mechanical Watch Box, the internal mechanism is automatically rewound, ready for the next reveal.

Made from Inox, acrylic glass, and microfibre, the Watch Box is hand-finished with polished, sand-blasted, satin, and lacquered elements.

Not for the casual watch collector

The L’Epée 1839 Mechanical Watch Box retails for 9,900 Swiss Francs. If you were to convert that to Malaysian Ringgit, expect to pay at least RM48,500.
