Seiko Revives 1970s Watch Model With Modern Design Inspired by Tokyo Horizon

Seiko is bringing back one of its boldest creations from the 1970s.
The King Seiko Vanac, known for its vibrant colours and sharp, edgy case designs, is making a comeback in 2025.
It’s more of a rebirth, really. That’s ’cause it’s not just a nostalgic reissue—it’s a modern reinterpretation that keeps the uniquely rebellious spirit of the original alive. But it’s got some modern upgrades for the 21st Century.
A throwback with a modern edge
If you’re not familiar with the original Vanac, here’s a quick refresher: Back in 1972, the King Seiko lineup of watches introduced the Vanac, which featured wild colours, multifaceted cases, and a distinctive flair that set it apart from its more traditional siblings.
Fast forward more than 50 years, and Seiko has decided the world is ready for another round.
This time, the Vanac is inspired by the Tokyo skyline (or “horizon” as they’re calling it)—an ever-changing, endless sprawl of light and structure. The new design keeps that strong, angular case but ditches the bezel, giving it a sleek, streamlined look.
The integrated bracelet combines polished and brushed links, creating a luxurious feel that seamlessly blends vintage and contemporary styling.
The dial is where things get really interesting, though. Each watch in the new lineup features a textured horizontal stripe pattern, giving it depth and a dynamic presence on the wrist.
The applied indices sit on a dedicated ring embedded into the dial, and if you look closely at the 12 o’clock marker and seconds hand counterweight, you’ll notice a bold ‘V’ shape—a subtle homage to the Vanac name.
Three dial colours will be available at launch, each representing a different time of day in Tokyo: Deep Purple for twilight, Navy Blue for midnight, and Silver for sunrise.
But Seiko isn’t stopping there—there’s also a golden-hued limited edition (only 700 pieces worldwide) and an ice-blue boutique exclusive, capturing the city’s skyline under a bright, clear sky:
Naturally, a watch this striking (and equally understated) needs a powerful movement to match, and Seiko definitely delivered. While the original Vanacs were visually stunning, they weren’t exactly known for their robust movements. That’s not the case here.
The new Vanac runs on the Caliber 8L45, a high-performance automatic movement with a 72-hour power reserve. Accuracy is rated at +10 to -5 seconds per day, and for the first time in the modern King Seiko collection, the case back is sapphire, letting you admire the movement in action.
The 8L45 is based on Seiko’s legendary 9S55 Grand Seiko caliber, meaning this watch isn’t just about looks; it’s got the technical prowess to back it up.
The new Vanac lineup will be hitting Seiko Boutiques and select retailers in July 2025.
