ke.lan.tan House
Home Away From Home
Penang has definitely won the hearts of many far and near with its infinite treasure box of heritance, going as far back as the 15th century. One of the many weather worn terrace buildings to be given a new lease of life is the ke.lan.tan House, located along Kelantan Road (hence the name). Three Penangites with a passion for the Penang heritage got together to refurbish this 1909 terrace house into a nostalgically attractive guesthouse, suitable from couple travellers to family vacationers; consisting of 10 rooms, each named after a famous street in George Town, the suites in ke.lan.tan House ranges from a Superior Suite of two single beds or a master bed, to a double-storey Family Suite with a master bed for the parents, and two single beds upstairs for the kids.
Throughout the ke.lan.tan House, guests will find priceless treasuries at every turn of the corner, making this guesthouse stand out from the rest across George Town. One of the owners, Anthony, is an avid antique collector, and he has searched high and low, and overturned every rock in Penang to salvage monuments from the olden days: from the old stone grinders restored into a small pond in the centre courtyard, to the intricate wooden carvings on the four-post bed.
With the exponential growth happening all around George Town, you could say that ke.lan.tan House has done a pretty good job straddling the state line between preservation and modernisation. Besides the restoration as mentioned above, ke.lan.tan. House made sure that guests can enjoy the nostalgia this 106-year-old house holds within its walls, with the convenience unavailable a century ago. Let’s face it, it’s all nice and dandy until someone has to use the toilet!
The owners of ke.lan.tan House has gone through the trouble to make sure each room has its own designated bathroom, even though it’s not an en suite. Not only that, conservation is as important as preservation for this household; ke.lan.tan House has a Heater Room behind the kitchen, where generated power from the air-conditioning is recycled to the water heaters in the bathrooms.
So, if you’d like a gist of how it was back in your forefathers’ days – from the literal creaks from the floorboards under your steps, to the rattan couches they sat on while sipping freshly brewed tea from clay tea sets, (and perhaps not to the extent of running to the back of the house for a “number two” down a hole), ke.lan.tan House may be an exceptional accommodation to consider, especially if you’re one who prefers a comfortable bed to go back to after roaming about George Town in Penang for an entire day, without a price that will break your bank.
