The Mercury Prize, formerly called the Mercury Music Prize is a big deal. Previous winners have been  Primal Scream, Suede, Portishead, Pulp, Roni Size/Reprazent, Gomez, Talvin Singh, Badly Drawn Boy, PJ Harvey, Ms. Dynamite, Dizzee Rascal, Franz Ferdinand, Antony and The Johnsons, Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and last year was Elbow. Impressed? You better be. Although how M People slipped in there is beyond us. Must have been a bad year. This year, alt-rock Kasabian has been nominated for the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize, and are the running favourite, right next to Florence & The Machine.

This annual UK ‘album of the year award’ started in 1992 backed by labels BPI and the British Association of Record Dealers, now known as the Entertainment Retailers Associations. This year’s nominees were announced by radio and TV presenter Lauren Laverne (formerly of Kenicke) on 21 July in Central London. Nominees must be British or Irish artists who have released an album/albums between July 2008 and July 2009.

It’s tough competition though with the very exciting La Roux, Florence And The Machine, Bat For Lashes, Glasvegas and dark horse Speech De Belle also in the running. Here’s what the band has to say on Xfm London, “It’s nice when it comes to you, because we’ve had lot of fights with media and the critics and stuff. But it seems like we’ve won. We try to invent new tastes in rock and roll music.”

The winner will be announced on September 8 and the awards bash will be hosted by BBC TV and radio presenter Jools Holland and broadcast on BBC Two and the BBC’s Mercury Prize site. Don’t miss this!
