MTV Networks Asia announced today that Malaysia will play host to MTV’s first originally produced MTV World Stage event on August 15 at Sunway Lagoon Resort in KL.  The outdoor concert event will feature live performances by UK band Kasabian, pop rock band All American Rejects and Malaysia’s Estranged and more, from a custom-built stage at the theme park’s Surf Beach. The MTV World Stage “Live In Malaysia” gig will also mark Kasabian’s 1st live appearance in Southeast Asia! Eat that Singapore.

The great heretics of British rock, Kasabian grabbed our ears by the nutsack with their self-titled debut album in 2003 and its singles, ‘Processed Beats’ and ‘Club Foot’. The band then went on to nab the award for Best Live Act award at the prestigious 2007 NME Awards. They come to Malaysia on the back of the release of their new album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum and single ‘Fire’. Fresh! “It’s going to be the first time we’ve ever played a gig in Malaysia and we are really looking forward to the opportunity to play for our Asian fans at the MTV World Stage event.  The fans can expect a fantastic show,” said Sergio Pizzorno, Kasabian’s frontman and guitarist.

Recorded live at the most exclusive gigs, world renowned music festivals and unique concert locations, MTV World Stage provides a “front row seat” to watch some of the most monster artists on the globe. The show 1st premiered in February this year and has a short time featured Coldplay live in Tokyo as well as Amy Winehouse, AC/DC, Kings of Leon, Metallica among others.

The August 15 “Live in Malaysia” gig will have special significance for Malaysian music fans. Used to getting pipped by our neighbouring countries for some of the best acts and music, dropping serious dough to travel to far flung gigs or (the next best thing) being relegated to catching one from the living room/office arm chair has long been a consigned fate. The special event however will see 15,000 fans get up close proper front seats stylee. Hallelujah!

“MTV World Stage ‘Live In Malaysia’ is quickly becoming one of the most highly anticipated music events of the year in the Pan-Asian region,” said Indra Suharjono, Executive Vice President, Managing Director of MTV Networks Southeast Asia & Greater China. “Our huge audience across 13 Southeast Asian territories and 44 MTV channels across the globe give us a tremendous opportunity to work with our sponsors to showcase Malaysia and this top-notch line-up of artists to the world.” The show will premiere on MTV Asia Friday, 28 August 2009 at 8pm and will also be broadcast on 44 MTV Channels in 157 different countries. The programme typically gets watched by over 550 million households. Huge!

It’s a coup for local band Estranged. The band 1st made headlines in January of 2008 when they won the coveted Anugerah Juara Lagu (Best Song Award) for ‘Itu Kamu’.  Vocalist Rich Gimbang, rhythm guitarist Din Hormatov, lead guitarist Nor Hanafi, drummer Azwin Andy have since gone on to win numerous awards in Malaysia, and the band was recently invited to perform at the Ho Hai Yan Rock Festival, one of the biggest rock music festival in Taiwan. Andy is also featured in the July issue of JUICE out now. The event should provide unparalleled exposure for the much deserved group and propel them to even greater international acclaim.

We’re not just excited for ourselves with this one, we’re excited for Estranged too! Check back when we reveal ticket details.
