JUICE Cool List 2008 Reveal Party @ Phuture
There are some people without whom JUICE would be lost. Our mum, dad, pet groomer … and then there are the 40 folk that we deem so cool we dedicated a special issue to them. Comprising of a cross section of DJs, musicians, singer-songwriters, club insiders and generally all round awesomely inspiring young people, even with our 94-page 2008 JUICE Cool List magazine, we still felt the best way to show our appreciation of these 40 influential scene shapers was with the best way we know how – a party.
Once again Hennessy VSOP who supported the initiative from the get go got our backs. Declaring Wednesdays the new weekend, the freshly minted Phuture was the scene of the celebration as invited guests and members of the public, who obtained their invites through www.juiceonline.com/coollist, arrived to the sounds of ambient-instrumentalist, Flica and a free flow of Hennessy VSOP cocktails. Specially concocted by Cool Lister Kyan Yap, owner of Urbanattic at Capital Square and Club 9 and Six Lounge off Asian Heritage Row in Kuala Lumpur was Eastern Sun. “It consists of Hennessy VSOP, green tea, lychee and fresh mint,” Kyan revealed of the ridiculously delicious, not to mention addictive drink.
DJ and former VJ Joey G played emcee as other Cool Listers provided the night’s entertainment, and after the usual intros, rap debutant Jin Hackman and rap-duo Dose 2 took the stage hostage with their steady swagger and dope tunes. Dancer Fellest and his crew were up next setting eyes ablaze with their crazy moves. Perhaps taking the theme literally, the crowd was similarly cool. But it wasn’t long before the social lubricator had worked its magic. Lapsap and Twilight Actiongirl DJ Xu, who was also named Best DJ and Most Stylist DJ in JUICE‘s year end Best Of award provided a banging soundtrack, and by the time rising deck talent Foulworks’ IvanX (minus Drth Sid who was called away on an emergency) – named JUICE’s Best New DJ winners – had lifted his mask to his face, the dancefloor was filled.
Besides this, local fashion designer Shahida Shariff showcased pieces from her Buttonmybutton line of clothing; and on display were artworks from celebrated designer Stephen Lau and photos of fashionspreads styled by stylist, boutique owner and club promoter Ethan Chu. Spotted amongst the crowd of Cool Listers and their entourages were DJ Blink, fashion stylist Cris Yong, Estranged’s Andy Azwin and JUICE contributor Lim Kok Kean aka Twilight Actiongirl’s DJ Bunga. While everyone left with a copy of the JUICE Cool List 2008, here’s hoping the act of bringing together the nation’s most creative people will instigate some interesting collaborations in the near the future. We’ll be right there ready to document it. J
Designed by Euseng Seto aka Flica and featuring the photographic work of WordsManifest, both of whom also feature in 2008’s Cool List, the JUICE Cool List 2008 hit stands on December 10 and was celebrated with the Cool List Reveal Party held at partner venue Phuture in Zouk KL. Both special issue and event was supported by Hennessy VSOP. You can get your copy at all good bookstores and newsstands priced RM8.
