For those who believe in Christina Aguilera’s style of over-singing, here’s Essex’s counterpart to er, pitch for. Jessica Cornish was a YouTube sensation (weren’t they all) and it’s easy to see why: the woman can sing, with a vocal array replete with ticks, volume and octaves. She also wrote tracks for Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus (‘Party In The USA’, anyone?) before topping BBC’s Sound Of 2011.

But her debut comes off as an attention-seeking, super-pop-ish attempt to claw at the Queen of Pop throne when she needn’t have to-‘Do It Like A Dude’ is most symptomatic of that. But she will climb those rungs regardless.
