For those who don’t know J Dilla, James Dewitt Yancey was born on 7 February 1972. More known as both J Dilla and Jay Dee, he emerged into the underground hip hop scene in Detroit, Michigan from the 90s. He was a member of Slum Village on their Fantastic, Vol. 2 album. He has also worked on Janet Jackson’s Grammy award-winning single ‘Got ‘Til It’s Gone’, A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Find A Way’, appeared as an uncredited instrumentalist in D’Angelo’s Voodoo album and on so many artists’ albums such as Common, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Moka Only, De La Soul, Heavy D, Mos Def, Guilty Simpson and the list goes on and on. Just as his music was getting its recognition, Dilla died in 2006 of the blood disease TTP. It was a major loss to the hip hop world. He was revolutionary and there’s only one J Dilla.
