We will always have a special place for Italy in our hearts for their exports … pasta, cheese, flash clothing, Benny Benassi…. Currently the 12th most popular DJ in the world, he gained international attention when 2003 single ‘Satisfaction’ crossed over from the club charts and consequently bagged DJ Mag’s tune of the year. Not content to let it lie the house jock recently snatched the 2008 Grammy for Best Remix straight out from under Carl Cox, Eric Prydz and Dirty South’s nose. No mean feat. We went to find out where he sticks his golden gramophone.

Hey Benny! Congratulations on the Grammy! How did the idea for the remix of Public Enemy’s ‘Bring the Noise’ come about?
The idea was suggested by our US Label, Ultra. They gave us a selection of Public Enemy tracks and I thought Bring The Noise would sound good with the Benassi bass.

What are your upcoming plans?
Lots of touring as usual and in the studio, Alle, my cousin and studio partner, and I are beginning to experiment with hip hop artists.

How did you first get involved in the scene?
I used to bug working DJs to teach me!

You’ve spun in clubs all over the world, which three stand out the most?
I’ve had such a great time in so many places that it’s really hard to single out just a few. I can’t not mention Guverment in Toronto, for sure.

Did you ever think that ‘Satisfaction’ would blow up like it has?
We sensed that it was a great club track but never imagined it would cross over into the pop charts in such a massive way.

What inspires you?
I think positively, eat healthy food, practice sports and spend time with my girlfriend. Life provides the inspiration.

What’s your favourite track on your latest release Rock ‘n’ Rave?
I like them all a lot. It depends on my mood. The track sung by Christian Burns gets me every time!

What have you been listening to lately?
Everything from Alex Gopher to Ella Fitzgerald. I have broad tastes and try to keep an open mind.

If you could collaborate with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
Batman.

Er, ok. We didn’t know that. Now tell us three other things we don’t know about Benny Benassi.
I have a real passion for bicycles and like restoring old models, I love Japanese food, I don’t smoke and the only alcohol I drink is good wine with my meals.

Benny Benassi’s latest album Rock ‘n’ Rave was released in June. He was in KL recently to headline Speed Zone Tour 2008 at Zouk KL on 18 October. Hit up www.bennybenassi.com for more or go to www.myspace.com/benassi.
