If you’re ever up in Penang and have a hunger for more than just incredible pork balls, try catching Hui Se Di Dai. The psych rock quartet sounds more like Mission To Burma than Beyond despite them singing in Mandarin. Translated as “Grey Zone”, the band’s name reflects their music which often crosses genre lines like a drunken jazz saxophonist. There’s a sense of space and freedom in songs like ‘One Way Ticket’. Not to be confused with the Neil Sedaka b!tch-left-me karaoke hit, Hui Se Di Dai channels the energy of great free jam bands like Mars Volta and Pearl Jam into this politically charged number.
