Hot Chip: One Life Stand (EMI)

The 4th album by this Brit alt dance act sounds more like a band effort despite it being chiefly synths, house and techno. If 2008’s Made In The Dark was like an electro robot on a bender for an oiling good time, then One Life Stand is a soul trying to connect with lost lovers on the dancefloor. The love theme (read: NOT emo) creeps in at every corner, sometimes with strings (‘Hand Me Down Your Love’). There are some pleasant surprises as well such as ‘Slush’, which is a slow, piano gospel-like ballad. Still danceable, One Life Stand redefines the phrase “Feel the beat”.
