Hostess Club Weekender

source: Cat Power

After being treated to the inaugural Weekender earlier this year in February where we witnessed the sublime Mogwai, The National, and Asgeir tear the house down alongside King Krule and Buke and Gase, we couldn’t wait for more from Hostess. Thankfully, our prayers have been answered, and the next edition of Weekender will be taking place in a couple of weeks down south. Muse of many a young’un, indie goddess Cat Power, New York eclectics Blonde Redhead, and the comparatively much younger Perfume Genius are set to return to Singaporean shores, where fellow performers electronic singer-songwriter SOHN and krautrock-inspired TOY are set to make their respective debuts on this side of the world.

We’re especially excited about Blonde Redhead. The trio, formed from a chance meeting of Japanese siren Kazu Makino and Milanese twin brothers, Amedeo and Simone Pace, possess a discography that parallels the tumultuous times in their lives with everything from artful chaos in their earlier work to pared down, stately windswept melodies from their latest release, Penny Sparkle. Perfume Genius has also evolved as an artiste since the last time he was in Singapore, with a more mature and refined sophomore album in his repertoire. The hypnotic overtones from Put Your Back N 2 It are at times surreal, and at others, soothing, and it would be interesting to see if he is capable of replicating its vibes in a live setting.

It has also been sometime since we’ve had a Krautrock-inspired band down here around these parts, and we’ll be looking at TOY to fill that void. They’ve been making waves in the British scene, opening for The Vaccines and being named one of NME’s must-listen-to bands. Cat Power needs no introduction, and SOHN’s sweet pipes have been getting us riled up and ready to rock. Or rather, sway our hips in gentle motions to the flowing rhythms of his manic vocals and transcendent soundscapes. All in all, we’re pumped for the next Hostess, and we’re hoping we’ll see some of you there too!
