Heineken Presents JUICE DJ Quest Regional Final 2008 @ Zouk

The region shook harder than a natural disaster as the Heineken presents JUICE DJ QUEST 08 Regional Finals took a swing at Zouk KL. 3 heavyweight DJs from 3 countries faced-off in pursuit of deck dominance by way of 20 minute sets on Pioneer Pro DJ equipment.

Capital FM’s Turn It Up! DJs, Gabriel and Joey G took on MC duties for the night and quickly warmed the audience. Judging the aspiring DJs were Regan Hamidjaja (Editor, JUICE Indonesia), Wayne Lee (Editor-in-Chief, JUICE Singapore) and Ng Lye Cwan (Account Manager, JUICE Malaysia).

First up was local champ, DJ Anowl. The torchbearer of the drum and bass scene wasted no time getting the crowd pumped. Stepping into high gear the theme from Knight Rider cut through the chaos. Maintaining the energy throughout his set, Anowl ended with a blaze that included some Jimi Hendrix-style tongue action on the decks. We like! (Or should that be “lick”-Ed.)

Next up was the mistress of minimalism, DJ EJ. The firsty female JUICE DJ Quest champion to hail from Singapore, EJ built up the momentum slowly and deliberately. Like a carefully constructed composition, she started with singular downtempos, injecting elements of electro and melodic techno along the way, all before climaxing in a blend of funky house.

The man from Indonesia, DJ Deefo came on unassuming-like as the last contestant for the night. The house advocate concocted an interesting techno intro which made the crowd nod in approval. Soon, nods became shuffles and then cross-steps as Deefo broke out the breaks via some far out sound. An electric and eclectic set it was indeed.

It was a close call and a tough decision due to the conflicting and individualistic styles of the contestants. But at the end of the night, DJ Anowl claimed the championship. After being hounded by Channel [V] and other press, all contestants walked away with Heineken and Pioneer goodies, not to mention JUICE trophies and official apparel from Topshop and Topman.
