Heineken Green Room is back. At the preview party at Cloth & Clef, the pre-party gave us a good indication of the state of mid we’ll be in when the big shebang on November 1 at Zouk, which will include a live and DJ set from Australian electro space rockers Van She, currently the hottest act on the never-more hip Modular Recordings stable, Tokyo’s ‘dex ‘n fx’ duo Dexpistols and our very own scene stealing Lapsap rolls around.

Greeted at the entrance with a brightly-lit ‘Green Room’ sign, the VIP crowd consisting of musicians, producers, artists, film-makers, designers, boutique owners, stylists and scene-makers currently defining Malaysia’s underground and alternative culture scenes, mingled amidst the floating green mannequin heads with ice-cold Heineken bottles in hand as Xu and Blink of Lapsap played on. Part of Heineken’s Green Room State of Mind series of installations the heads came complete with a viewing port that allowed guests to view the slide show going on inside.

With Vandal serving host as the emcee the State of Mind theme continued as Cloth & Clef took on the mantle of Green Room art gallery featuring among others artworks from Bombshelter Studio, a collaboration between blogger Joyce Wong and fashion designer Jimmy Lim, as well as the Lapsap boys. A recurring theme was the mixture of old and new technology and imagery. Bombshelter Studios’ series of three Symphony of One sculptures contained a deconstructed walkman, CD player and an old music centre with every nut, bolt and transistor laboriously laid out to create a series of sprawling sculptures. Lapsap, on the other hand, started with the old, referencing the classic Run DMC King of Rock LP cover featuring themselves as dot matrix heads on a two metre tall digital print.

JUICE rubbed sweaty elbows with rapper Reefa, hip hop artist Illsteez, the Twilight Actiongirl posse, party promoters Kenny Wee and Ethan Chu and Heineken alumni like Altered Image and B4C, and forthcoming Heineken Impulse featured designers Mart & Micki. With plenty of ice-cold bottles of Heineken Beer doing the rounds, the atmosphere was friendly and animated. At the end of the night, Heineken’s parting gift were special invitation packs to the Green Room event and a pair of white- or green-armed Wayfarer-style shades, which everyone quickly snapped up, put on and posed with, the enthusiasm even spilling out onto Changkat Bukit Bintang. If this was the preview, we can only imagine the full on fervour that the big event promises. J
