Happy Birthday Spongebob!
He lives in a pineapple under the sea — need we say more? Can’t believe it has been 10 years already. Fans in more than 170 countries rejoice as animated sea creature Spongebob SquarePants celebrates his 10th anniversary on television this week.
Comedians Robin Williams, Will Ferrell, and Ricky Gervais will appear as themselves in a one-hour anniversary SpongeBob special to be broadcast on Nickelodeon this fall. Victoria Beckham is scheduled to make a guest appearance later this year.
The former international fashionista worked on the project, providing the voice of a British princess, in Los Angeles late last year. “Scriptwriters created the role of a posh British princess especially for her and were blown away by what a natural she was. Victoria enjoyed every minute and is keen to do more.”
Nickelodeon celebrates this weekend with a blowout bash of 11 new episodes and a countdown of fan favorites. Previous guests have included David Bowie, LeBron James, Whoopi Goldberg and Ray Liotta.
“I never really imagined a show about a sponge going past our first season,” Spongebob creator Stephen Hillenberg was quoted as saying in Yahoo! News. “I thought maybe we’d have a cult following, and we’d be gone after one season. I’m in disbelief that we’re here talking.” The first episode aired on July 19, 1999. A month later, the show’s first celebrity guest voices appeared — Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway.
