Since the age of the PlayStation 2, Grand Theft Auto has dominated the video game industry with its open-world gameplay, giving players a massive sandbox to do whatever they want.

After almost 10 years of Grand Theft Auto V across three different PlayStation generations, Rockstar Games has finally announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles in 2025.

Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”

Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet. The setting of Vice City was last seen in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City which was released in 2002.

Beyond an expanded world that includes swamplands and vibrant cities, Grand Theft Auto VI also features a female lead character. From what we’ve seen, she will be joined by a male partner, acting as a sort of Bonnie and Clyde story to the usual GTA gameplay.

What is curious is that Grand Theft Auto VI will be skipping a PC release for now, going straight onto the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles in 2025 first. So far, we’ve also only seen what can be presumed to be the single-player campaign and not the much-anticipated online mode.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in December, Rockstar Games pioneered the open-world genre of video games with the launch of Grand Theft Auto III. The series has become one of the biggest-selling, most critically acclaimed and influential games in all of modern entertainment.

Grand Theft Auto VI has been a long time coming and its predecessor’s ten-year lifespan has shown how much fans love this series.
