GAP 0% Plastic Bag: GAP Celebrates Earth Day 2012 With 4 Local Street Artists
VITALITY AND BALANCE BY SKINNER
(GRAPHIC DESIGNER, PAINTER)
“It is sad to know that the mesmerising view of the Berembun Forest is slowly disappearing from the city. We should be conscious about the balance of Mother Earth and it’s time for us to give back.” – Skinner
T.W Chang is a self taught artist who displayed passion and raw talent for fine art from a very young age. After being introduced by a friend, GAP Malaysia invited Skinner to come on board for their 0% Plastic campaign – an “uncanny coincidence” described Skinner as GAP Malaysia approached him after his trip to The Dusun. Amazed by the jungle during his trip there, Skinner designed his tote with his own style of typography art called “ROOTography”.
What drew you to this collaboration with GAP?
As an underground artist I hardly deal with mainstream brands. But because it was for a good cause I didn’t see a reason to reject it.
What was the process of this collaboration from concept to execution?
Well, we got the brief and we got rules. Commercialism – you can’t really make “dark stuff”. So the concept and style had to appeal to everyone, so I did an illusion print that portrays a skull.
What is your personal take on environmental issues and what are your ways of helping the environment in your daily schedule?
Environmental issues are pretty fu**ed up, everyone knows it and talks about it but really, how conscious are we to practice them in our daily lives?
Do you think awareness is enough to help the environment?
I don’t think so, people have been talking for a very long time but do you see any improvement? Actions speak louder than words, it’s all about our own consciousness and willingness, vitality and balance. Neighbourhoods should have frequent gotong-royong and schools should cultivate activities that encourage tree planting. I am actually planning a self-initiative project with my own funding via digital as a channel.
