INTERLUDE BY FAIZAL REZA AKA SKUIRTGUN
(DIGITAL ILLUSTRATOR, GRAPHIC DESIGNER)

The inspiration came from a drawer of used plastic bags. We are guilty of this at some point in our lives. Wouldn’t it be great if we could turn back time and reduce our carbon footprint?” – Faizal Reza

As one of the Creative Directors of McCann Worldgroup, Faizal Reza graduated as a Graphic Design student from the Malaysian Institute of Arts. Faizal’s 0% Plastic tote features the Skuirtgun signature swirls and shapes. As described by Faizal, “For projects using my Skuirtgun moniker, I would always go back to my “skuirt” illustration style. Instead of going overtly conceptual, I decided to stay within the “plastic bag” idea itself. At first I just wanted to take inspiration from the standard plastic bag colours of pink and orange. But as time progressed, I saw more possibilities yet still sticking to the theme.”

What drew you to this collaboration?
The fact that it is for a good cause and they are not selling the bag for a profit.

What was the process from concept to execution?
I would go around taking photos of things revolving around the concept in hopes that it could inspire the visual. From there I’d start sketching the “skuirts” on paper. This would be the longest process as I try to get the most interesting visual. From there it goes into the computer for colour exploration and final touch ups.

What is your personal take on environmental issues?
I believe we’re way behind compared to European countries. We’re slowly getting there but we need more effort to educate the people on the importance of recycling and little things like BYOB (bring your own bag). Retailers have to play a role to educate their customers but more importantly their sales assistants as well.

What are your ways of helping the environment in your daily schedule?
The usual act of separating trash, recycling and not using plastic bags when shopping. It’s too far for me to cycle to work but I ride a motorcycle. I guess in some ways it is better than driving a car. I burn less fuel and spend less time on the road. I hate being stuck in the jam.

Do you think awareness is enough to help the environment?
Awareness has to be followed up with action. The world will be a better place if everyone does their part.
