Foo Fighters, Selena Gomez, H.E.R., J Lo & More to Headline Global Vaccine Concert
Following last year’s One World – Together At Home fundraiser virtual event hosted by Lady Gaga, organiser Global Citizen, an international advocacy organisation, will be presenting a new global streaming and broadcast special event on 8 May 2021.
VAX LIVE: The Concert To Reunite The World will be hosted by Selena Gomez and will feature artistes such as Jennifer Lopez, H.E.R., J Balvin, Foo Fighters and Eddie Vedder.
Apart from entertaining the world with a line of artists and changemakers, the event is campaigning for equal access to vaccines, tests and treatments all around the world.
“This is really an opportunity to call on world leaders to make sure that the 27 million heroic healthcare workers around the world that don’t yet have access to a vaccine can get access over the coming months,” Global Citizen Chief Executive Hugh Evans told Reuters.
He said the reality right now is that many wealthy countries are starting to stockpile vaccines and added that this broadcast would urge nations to donate excess doses and provide financial support to COVAX facility, backed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI).
Evans said the good news is that many countries have started donating doses, giving Australia as an example that donated a million doses to Papua New Guinea. “There’s really great momentum that is building,” he opined.
According to Reuters, COVAX aims to secure 2 billion vaccine doses for lower-income countries by the end of 2021.
Malaysians can catch the global event live on Global Citizen’s YouTube channel at 8am on Saturday (9 May 2021).
