Five Minutes with Ramsey Westwood

The next up and coming DJ is here! DJ Ramsey Westwood emerged champion in the second season of Astro Hitz Spin Master. But it’s no walk in the park for him, after reaching top 8, he had to let his skills and sets do the talking (or rather, spinning) to win the public’s vote.

He did just that and FTW, he got an all expense paid trip to London and a chance to spin with Gavin Mitchell, resident DJ at MOS London. The 22-year old spinster is based in Penang but expect him to be spinning in KL soon!

Good job on winning Astro Hitz Spin Master 2! What do you think made you win the title?
Thanks! I think what made me win the first prize was the background and quality of music that I was exposed to, and reaching out to the people with the music that I loved.

So you’re a self taught DJ. What got you into spinning the decks and how long have you been doing this?
Well it was a calling for me to be a DJ. I think it’s inherited from my mom whom was a DJ in 1979. It has already been 6 years overall, 4 years in the club scene.

Who are your biggest influences?
My biggest influences are producers and DJs such as Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren and Paul Van Dyk.

You’re getting a chance to spin with Gavin Mitchell in MOS, London. How does that feel?
It feels great. The excitement is already kicking in! I’ve never really got the chance to perform overseas alongside a world renowned producer/DJ such as Gavin Mitchell.

Any secret weapons to get party-goers moving?
Well dropping anthems and good tracks is a weapon I would say, but then again the main weapon for me is to be yourself on the decks, play the type of music that you like which shows your originality.

Where and when do you usually spin and what should party people expect from your sets?
I’m usually based in Penang but currently not attached to any clubs and I am looking forward to play all over Malaysia if I get the chance to. People can expect great vibes of quality music and also music that suits the environment/atmosphere.
