Fahrenheit88 to Heat Up Bukit Bintang

The soft opening of the new mall, fahrenheit88, which has already received a lot of hype and attention, took place on the 15th of September. Situated smack bang in the middle of Jalan Bukit Bintang, Fahrenheit88 promises to be the newest and hottest shopping destination. Bukit Bintang, being the tourist and shopping hub of KL, hosts this centrally located complex featuring 200 retail spaces on 5 floors, over half of which are already open. The main feature store is Uniqlo, Japan’s number one casual wear designer. Think of it as a blend of H&M, American Eagle Outfitters and Gap.

The anchor store Uniqlo is targeted to be open by the first week of November, and is the largest in the mall; it’ll be a staggering 3 floor outlet. The soft opening featured a lot of Japanese inspired, Harajuku themed high fashion models who wore over-the-top platforms, excessive makeup and ginormous hairstyles. There was also an entertaining fashion show that displayed some of the the clothes and products sold in the mall. This latest shopping spot is targeting a niche market of a young, vibrant and creative crowd.

Fahrenheit88’s aesthetic as a whole is full of glass, with a huge glass skylight in the lobby, allowing way more natural light than any other mall. As it’s so close to Sungei Wang and Pavillion, you might want to know what the catch is with this mall? It’s meant to be the missing link in between both the mass market Sungei Wang and high end Pavillion – this one is for the urbanites. It’s also on a much smaller scale, supposedly providing you with a more personalised shopping experience, and it’s claim is that 50% of the stores cannot be found in any other mall. Personally, I like their dedication and focus on streetwear.

The exciting stores that I found to stock cool stuff was WWW, R20, Poudoudou and Charles & Keith. Here’s to hoping this mall will not blur into the same generic vibe as all the others. Until it’s official opening on the 23rd of November 2010, Fahrenheit88 will be organising street festivals every weekend this September on Jalan Bukit Bintang. Burn, baby, burn.

Fahrenheit88 is situated on 179 Jalan Bukit Bintang, 50250 Kuala Lumpur, former KL Plaza. For more information, go to www.fahrenheit88.com.
