There was a time when Xu’s idea of curation was being behind the decks, selecting the kind of music you should be listening to with a touch of his own music style. Slowly, he’s taken a larger interest in fashion since his first vintage shop Bird in Sungei Wang (now defunct), then Replacement Boutique Salon in Bangsar (currently just a salon), and three other stores in the same area – Unity Store KL, Loaded Inc, and Bazarro – all of which are either closing or already closed. But don’t construe that as Xu exiting the fashion scene, his prior experience has culminated in his main focus now – Fabspy.

How would you say Fabspy stands out from the other shops of the same likeness around town (or even your own previous boutiques)?
Unlike the other multi-brand stores around, whose brand philosophy determines the products they carry, the brands Fabspy carries are curated based on our interactions with our customers, both online and offline. Such synergy can only mean that over time, the mix of products we carry will evolve, something that we believe is an interesting concept to have for a store. The only constant you can expect from us is the fact that we will always continue to reinvent ourselves and deliver wonderful curations to the crowd.

Despite the technological era we’re in, Fabspy decides to go against the flow and establish a physical store after having an online store. What do you think the physical store can achieve for the brand, as well as the customers, that Fabspy has not been able to previously by being just online?
Somehow, the idea of shopping physically – stepping into a store and actually feeling and trying out the products you’re interested in – still has its charm and pulling factor. “Seeing is believing” is still a strong mantra amongst our customers, especially when the products they are interested in are above a certain price point. It’s all about gaining confidence of the brands and their products, and if we can provide a space where our customers can do just that, it’s another step further for Fabspy.

You were – and still are – quite a known figure in the local music scene, having been a part of DJ collectives like LapSap and Twilight Actiongirl, then, you ventured into the local fashion industry with multiple shops before – and now you’re a part of Fabspy. How did you get caught up in the midst of it all?
I was introduced by a friend to the owner of an e-commerce provider, and from there, we were inspired to collaborate and play off each other’s strength. Since I have a network of fashion brands that I have built from my other multi-label stores, and seeing that it’s the technological era right now, it only makes sense to work together with an e-commerce provider to see a business grow.

What is your personal favourite brand under Fabspy’s curation?
For clothing brands, I’d say Subcrew, Vision Streetwear, Black Supply and Joe Chia. Besides that, I also like accessories from brands like the Hong Kong-based Protest Design Company.
