WATCH: 10 of 528 Escapees Die While Crossing Highway After Protest-Turned-Riot at Kedah Immigration Centre
A protest which happened today (20 April) involving roughly 528 Rohingya detainees quickly turned into a riot at around 5 am. The incident happened at an immigration detention centre in Relau, Bandar Baharu in Kedah which then resulted in a massive prison break.
According to The Star, a total of nine of the escapees were killed while trying to cross the North-South Expressway in Jawi, and one more died in the detention centre during the riot due to illness.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said in one of the accidents, six of the escapees comprising two men, two women and two children (a boy and a girl) were killed.
“Police with the help of local villagers managed to rearrest 317 of the inmates while 205 of them are still at large,” said Comm Mohd Shuhaily.
Police have also deployed personnel to the centre to control the situation as the efforts to round up the remaining escapees are ongoing. Apparently, most of the Rohingya there were previously detained in operations by various agencies in Langkawi.
In the meantime, Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud will call for a press conference in Putrajaya soon.
